04/03/2019 | NWPC Partners with Polar Olympics

North-Western Phosphorous Company has traditionally been a partner of the international Festival of the North (also called the Polar Olympics).

The opening ceremony of the 85th international Festival of the North was held at Murmansk Ice Sports Palace on 23 March 2019. During the ceremony, Acting Governor of the Murmansk region Andrei Chibis noted the significance of the event for Murmansk region and the northern area as a whole.

The Festival of the North is a major winter sports event divided into multiple stages that take place in all parts of the region, as well as abroad. This year, over 5,000 athletes, including NWPC employees, engaged in the competition. Sergei Krukovsky, freight handler at the Company’s apatite concentrate unit, was among the top ten in the 25-km ski marathon.

The 85th Festival of the North included 14 competitions in 12 sports with athletes from all over the world. For the first time, the Festival featured snow volleyball, the Russian Biathlon Championship, and a stage of the Russian Sled Dog Racing Championship held in Kirovsk. The Polar Olympics concluded with the Murmansk Ski Marathon under the Euroloppet programme.

Each year, the Company rewards ski marathon winners with gift certificates. It also presented a new television to Severomorsk resident Denis Fedorov, who was the fastest marathoner at the end of a two-day competition.

In total, 321 sets of medals were awarded during the Festival of the North.
